When is Just Dickin' Around?
The 1st and 3rd (and 5th) Thursdays at 8:30 p.m.!
Where is Just Dickin' Around ?
At Hydrate: 3458 N. Halsted St. in Chicago (right on the corner of Halsted and Cornelia in Boystown). Hydrate is 21+.
How much is Just Dickin' Around?
The show is free! We do collect donations for our showcase guests in our Just Dickin', Just Donatin' bucket, so please hug them monetarily with your dollars—they'll love you forever and so will we!
Tell me about your show!
We sure will! At Just Dickin’ Around, we've worked hard to cultivate a safe space with a supportive, empowering, and fun atmosphere that includes free pizza, enthusiastic producers, and attentive audience members!
What does "safe space" mean?
A space devoid of misogyny, racism, and hate speech against the GLBTQ community. There's enough of that in the world—we don't need it at our show.
Why are you so goddamn nice?
The world can be a dark place—let's give each other a break, support one another, and laugh together a few hours a month!
What's the show breakdown?
1st and 3rd Thursdays: all-genders showcase and open mic
5th Thursdays (March, June, August, and November): all-ladies showcase and open mic
What time is the showcase?
What time is the open mic?
How many spots are available in the open mics?
How many minutes do I get?
How do I sign up for the open mic?
Show up at Hydrate by 8 p.m. to sign up in person! You may want to get there ahead of time- sometimes the line forms outside as early as 7:30 p.m. Once you're signed up, you can stick around for the 8:30 p.m. showcase or head out to another mic—it's up to you! Just be back before the 9:45 p.m. mic start time!
Can the showcase and open mic be longer?
Thanks for wanting to hang out with us for awhile! We have a limited amount of time in our venue and a very specific vision for our show, so each portion of the show is only an hour long for these reasons.
If I'm performing, can you film my set on your video camera?
Yes! We'll do it for $10 (cash only) and upload it to Google Drive within 5–7 days with your name and the name of our show! When you check in, let us know you want your set filmed and we'll take it from there!
How do you book for your showcases?
We book our showcases a couple of months in advance by reaching out to people we think would be a great fit for our show! We often find them at our mics and other comedy shows around the city, so head on out there- we might contact you! If we've asked you for your email address and added you to our list of performers to contact when we have a spot, sit tight, Dwight! We'll email you as soon as there is a spot for you! Hooray!
How do I let you know that I'm interested in being booked?
Thanks for wanting to be a part of our showcase! If you would like to be considered, please send an email to firstname.lastname@example.org with a video and any credentials you have and we will get back to you if we think you'd be a good fit!
What should I not do?
Thanks for asking! Every producer team is different and has their own way of doing things. At JDA, we ask for professional emails over being approached at a show. That way no one feels awkward or put on the spot. For realz with a z, please, please, please don't approach us at a show and ask to be put on a showcase. You can high-five us, though!
What makes a great JDA showcase performer?
Similar to what makes a great friend or romantic partner: a sense of humor, respectful behavior, and no punching (down)! We dig all different types of styles and voices on the Hydrate stage and love introducing new talent to our audiences! We just draw the line at assholes. Everyone has one, but no one needs to be one.
What makes a great JDA audience member?
Someone who's there to laugh, have a great time, and hear from underrepresented voices! We ask that you silence your cell phone and hold conversations until the end of the show. If you need to talk, just head into the front bar past the curtain so as not to disturb other audience members and the comedians.
Who started Just Dickin’ Around?
The hilarious visionary Amy Eisenberg, our queer fairy godmother! If you're lucky you can catch her bartending at Hydrate after the show or zooming around the city on her motorcycle!
